Hopefully with 6 months of practice, AA would be smarter by then. I may end up doing what you said for the peace of mind in the end though, lol.
EDIT: two questions regarding doing this:
1. would it be a problem if AA lets me on with SHA-HKG ticket and at PVG immigration I show them the XIY-HKG ticket? Wondering if AA will be transmitting my entire itinerary as they know to PVG immigration?
2. I don't know much about cancellation policies in this situation, so would it be a better idea to book SHA-HKG via Cathay's Asia miles (10k+240HKD) or AA (17.5K+12.3USD, operated by CX)?
