My take is there are currently seats available for 5 to sit in and if, as you have said , the flight us no longer for sale that will remain the case. Your issue is the current cabin config will not allow you to pre select seats

thanks to everyone who responded for taking the time to post and explain to me. It is so helpful to understand the system. BA are not very helpful; they just said they had a global outage and ”go to check in”. But I have several flights coming up and none with this issue. Here’s hoping it goes OK. Much appreciated
