Hotel is like the rest of Malta, lacking in the finishing touches
Stayed in a suite and will try to give as much info as possible since it was difficult to find any details online before booking. I took photos but am currently having issues with my cloud storage so this will be text only.
I emailed the hotel in advance with some questions/requests. Got a response eventually but they really want you to call the hotel for everything.
Even the Hyatt customer service online directed me to call and couldn't answer any of my questions. This could be inconvenient if you're not already in Europe and have to make an international call for a simple query.
First impressions on entering the hotel: it opened this year so decor is up to date, shiny and spanking new. The design reminds me of a slightly less chaotic Moxy hotel color scheme.
Check in wasn't as smooth as I would have liked. I repeated my requests and instead of a yes or no received a "We'll see". I had asked for an early check in and the staff member refused to confirm if it would be possible or not until after payment? Never came across that before. In the end it was a no. So I occupied myself until the 2pm check in time.
The suite itself is stunning. I have been to the other Hyatt (Regency) across the street and the main reason I chose Centric was due to the suite size. The latge separate sitting area, a second toilet, and a terrace that can seat 4 people really is a huge difference to the King suites at HR.
Open the sliding door and you have access to the bedroom. I had a great night's sleep and like Goldilocks found the bed and pillows not too hard or soft but just right. There's a high end alarm clock and phone with buttons for housekeeping and the front desk (but no outside calls).
The bathroom is also quite large with a separate bathtub and double sinks. Toiletries were not Acqua di Parma sadly but some other brand I'd never heard of, Bee Kind I believe. No bath gel but I purchased my own and the tub filled quickly. Like the previous poster, I did notice the lack of finishing on the doors and around the seams of the tub and other areas of the suite. While shoddy construction is the norm in Malta I didn't expect it from Hyatt.
I had club lounge access and visited the 9th floor lounge twice. Once around 11:45 am when there were just drinks, and again around 1:30 pm when again only drinks were available. At check in I was given an envelope with details of the lounge timings (another oddity I haven't experienced before). According to the paper inside , there should have been afternoon tea cake and etc (not sure what the etc. is) from 10 am to 3 pm. I saw no food items on both my visits except for plastic containers of nuts and dried fruit. There is a fully stocked soft drink fridge, selection of tea bags, and an espresso coffee machine. I did see a member of staff on my second visit but it is supposed to be self service and she didn't greet or interact with me. The launch has plenty of seating options, tables, a sofa and a large Terrace as well as two large screen TVs. The opening hours according to the paper are 8 am to 10 pm.
I visited the house restaurant, Jumu, for both breakfast and dinner. Breakfast is continental style and has all of the standard. Cold cuts , cheese , cereal , two types of bread, Some hot items, large self serve coffee machine. And on the drink bar, what I thought was quite funny: a bottle of prosecco on ice, from which I saw a woman helping herself to a couple of glasses in her bathrobe and slippers. Like everything else in Malta you just have to shake your head and smile.
Overall I was not impressed by the quality and there were not many local dishes. So if you are hoping to experience any maltese cuisine , you should probably eat elsewhere. They did have mini versions of the local pastizzi, pea or cheese filled filo dough similar to the pastries you find around the Mediterranean. Again to bring up the HR, their food was superb. Not sure why the Centric f&b service was so much worse. You could tell they used the cheapest ingredients possible. If you follow any special diets I'm not sure if you'll be accommodated As I didn't see anything labelled vegan or gluten free. I did enquire about vegan items with a server and she said they could make a vegan sausage to order.
The spa and fitness area in the basement was my final stop. The gym is basic but functional. The spa is run by an outside company and really is just a couple of treatment rooms. The pool area has a number of loungers and a hot tub. The sauna was out of order for my entire stay and maintenance people were working on it both times I visited. There was also loud upbeat music playing so definitely not a relaxing experience.
Would I recommend this hotel? If you're looking for novelty and a larger suite choice than the Hyatt Regency, maybe. I wouldn't use my points for it unless I planned to stay in the room for the entire stay.
