Another thing to keep back of your mind are the upgrade vouchers you receive with additional spend. I have been able to use them last minute for Suites flights to LHR / FRA. Make sure your J fare is upgradable, ie no biz lite fare, and be flexible / willing to upgrade last min if needed.
It seems like these are only available after reaching PPS Solitaire, or in high KF Elite points. Seems like I don't get KF Elite rewards anymore since I'm PPS, which is a shame, since most of the PPS rewards won't kick in for me
