There have been complaints about Citi's tracking for giftcards.com.
In addition the cashback bounced around between 4% and 1.5% on the Citi Merchant Offer even after you activated the offer.
It happened to some people; myself included.
Citi couldn't be trusted.
Which shopping portals are you talking about? How well do they track?

Buying $200 VGC at Staples in-store is not online spending.
The entire point of this exercise is to get $1000 online spending for 250K points with the most certainty.
