what I sometimes do is book and pay H fare and then upgrade using Avios if available/applicable.
as stated above when you get a ticket with Avios, you can’t upgrade that ticket, again my experience
I have been checking this as my son and husband have booked two seats in J with avios and I’m in PE to EZE in mid October what I have seen is that as dates get closer for EZE many more J seats open up in fact for most of January the 0845 flight has at least 8 seats per flight, the midday one has around the same for a few days. The only one isn’t available is the overnight flight. I’m on the 1230 flight in October so will just keep checking especially a month or so out when these seats seem to come out. So they can open up just keep checking . . Otherwise I’ll be slumming in it in PE which is fine.
