Interesting. I never got more than a single e-mail with upgrade rates, so they must be hurting if they're sending out more on discount.
Having followed a few major points properties over the years, and having visited 4 myself (W.A/Conrad/St Regis and 2X Park Hyatt)--- there never seems to be a rhyme or reason to the upgrade world in the Maldives. I thought--simply---that the Over Water Villas were the gold standard and you'd always have to pay more than the beach villas. But turns out many people prefer beach villas, and some hotels consider those to be more valuable. Meanwhile Conrad gives you the choice of beach or owv for the same price, W.A changed it up to a "Reef Villa", and now I can't even keep track of what PH Maldives is doing.
It's complex enough that I can't offer empathy for being upset that anyone isn't getting a free upgrade... even as Globalist. Also, of so many places I've been, this is one place where I don't want to arrive worried about what type of villa I'll be in. I'd get what I want locked down and be happy with it. I even plan to give their Presidential Villa a shot down the line (gotta compare to JJAE and Stella Maris).
