I’m flying tomorrow GLA/LGW/TPA. I recently was given a very pretty birdcage umbrella which I decided I would take with me and it can live at my “other house”. Packing tonight and it’s too big for the suitcase. It’s walking stick length so not foldable. I’m probably going to leave it here but I wondered if I would have been able to take it as hand luggage. I can’t think I’ve seen anyone with something other than a foldable walking stick but just wondered if anyone knew?!

I’m thinking I’ll find some packaging (should have kept the box it arrived in!) and perhaps check it on the next trip.
I would anticipate you are unlikely to have problems on the GLA->LGW segment, and even less likely to have problems on LGW->TPA. It should fit into overhead bins on top of or behind other luggage. The least unlikely problem (still not likely) is a problem at security (try not to look like a member of the Bulgarian Secret Service).
