Why Do Similar Flights Take Different Routes

I noticed yesterday's BA flights to SIN, despite only leaving 2 hours apart, took totally different routes with the A380 BA11 flying over the Black Sea, Azerbaijan etc. whereas the 777 BA15 flew down over Greece on to Egypt and over Saudi Arabia. Is this due to the different types of planes and the fact that fuel efficiencies might differ or is it merely pilot preference? Weather does not seem to have been a factor.
