Anyway, I'm assuming the cutoff is based on when the tag prints, and not when it's handed off to the agent, right? So as long as you scan your boarding pass and get the machine to print the tag at T-51, you could hand it off even at T-40 without further issues if the queue is backed up?
It's the same at PDX except the actual bag drop process time has increased quite a bit compared to when the agent would simply scan your bag, check your ID, and you drop it at the counter. Now you have to fiddle around with the new baggage machines and many times there will be some sort of error that requires agent intervention...way more time consuming.
