Upgrade awards for me are a joke. I stayed at 2 hotels this year where an upgrade meant something and I was denied both times. Just stayed at a Residence Inn. I read what the upgrade room was and I couldn't figure out how it differed from the standard room. But my 5 upgrade are expiring in a week, so I applied them. I was denied. Never choosing upgrade awards again. Just not sure what else has any value to me.
On the other hand, I booked a 3 night mini vacation/bed run at the Sheraton Waikiki on points… booked the cheapest city view room, and used my NUAs to get upgraded to a lovely Kai Suite. That suite goes for like $1600 a night.
