I was in a fancy apartment in Venice (a surprise upgrade from a B&B that ran out of rooms), and it had an elegant old dining table and chairs on a big oriental carpet. (Everything was old and elegant in there.) I tripped on the edge of the carpet and fell onto one of the chairs and it just collapsed. It was old and rickety--probably an antique. I called them and to my relief their primary concern was that I was not hurt, and they said don't worry about the chair.
