indeed, south east Asia (except Singapore which is a bit different) and Northeast are very different from that point of view! Not that you always get upgraded in Southeast Asia or never in northeast Asia but even just asking in Japan or Korea will get you some strange looks and if they do upgrade they will strictly stick to whatever upgrade the rules mandate.
