I don't have an answer for your current situation but it's easy to ensure your VA points don't expire. Link 7-11 to VA for fuel purchases. They also have some pretty decent bonuses (including double points for December).

Flybuys with automatic or manual transfer. Coles and Liquorland shopping (from memory) can also gain you up to 10 SC's per month.

You can also buy from a range of stores through the VA portal. This includes eBay.

They do make it really easy to have regular activity.
