Just to bump this thread with a related question.

I need a one-way ex-Europe to the US as part of a self-assembled RTW trip. My outbound is *A, but flights leaving the US as part of the RTW will be on a non-*A carrier.

A one-way *A MUC-LAX on LH or UA (M fare) costs ~€1800, but a RT or open-jaw MUC-LAX-MUC with a throwaway return is ~€900. When building fares on UA’s site, I can choose "Economy" for the outbound (fare basis: KNCDXG8/DXT1) and "Economy (fully refundable)" for the return (fare basis: SFFDXD8/DXT1).

If I book this mix, can I cancel the refundable return after flying the outbound? Is there a way to get UA's website to display fare basis per segment before ticketing, or would I need book and then check the e-receipt to confirm the refundable portion?
