correct, you would have to clear together and into the same upgrade class. And the non-1k/GS is only at booking, no waitlisting

It's not a 1K benefit, it's a benefit for all Premiers - Premier Instant Upgrade. The only difference is that 1Ks can also get an instant upgrade on M fares.
And 1Ks (& GS) clear into PN, commonly more available than PZ all other elites for Instant Upgrades (CPU routes).
And no waitlisting for no 1Ks/GS
