I recently booked YYZ-EWR-NRT in Premium Economy - with the YYZ-EWR leg in Economy (booked in B)

my (Platinum) husband is on the same PNR.

I know that if I were travelling alone I would be upgraded on the YYZ-EWR if PN space opens up (not any currently).

Questions:

1) I assume there will be no instant upgrade since my husband is on the same PNR

2) I’m going to apply PlusPoints to the reservation. If I were travelling alone I know to only apply it to the EWR-NRT segment since the B fare as a 1K trumps PlusPoints. But since I’m with my husband, should I apply the PlusPoints to the YYZ-EWR segment as well? I guess that gives a chance of upgrades in advance, but would we be lower at the gate than had I just left it as an unPlusPointed B fare?
