Regarding the Centrino WiFi vs. IBM WiFi, the centrino WiFi is also on a Mini-PCI chip that can be removed. I have the Intel 2100 chip (which is the Centrino chip on the early T4x series)
I also have a T40, for about 2 years now. I'm incredibly rough with it, and it still works as perfectly now as it did when I bought it, unlike the highly unreliable Dell it replaced. I couldn't recommend IBM more highly.
I should add that the battery life is amazing. I bought the larger battery which sticks out slightly in back, but not in any way that's a problem -- when new I regularly got 7 hours, now its about 4 or 5, which is to be expected a few years in.
