I've always had issues with it producing itins that AA can't book. Were any codeshare? I've found switching at least 1 to the prime flight number allows it to be bookable.
The call centre could book the prime, but the price went up way more than I was prepared to pay. Martin at Propeller suggested an alternative that got me more TPs and was actually slightly cheaper, though it priced way more on Matrix.
