The trip is in early March and I will report back... I hope I don't have to spend the night in the airport - the UA agent told me there's no guarantee of a hotel

here. Essentially, the F1-F4 area is now closed and you will need to first use a temporary connector from near G1 to near F12 if connecting to the E or D gates, hence the discussion of longer walk times and using the AirTrain.
And, yes, United will rebook you in case of a missed connection. If you already know that you will miss your flight after clearing customs (CBP), there is a kiosk specifically for rebookings right outside the CBP area. If you have already cleared security and are airside, however, there are no physical kiosks - you will need to call customer service or scan a QR code to speak to a virtual kiosk.
