Woah, thank you all for these very helpful responses. No I will not have checked luggage as it's a 4 day work trip. I think I should be able to stuff everything in a small suitcase. It's a bummer that the lounge is not open 24 hours - even more incentive to make the connection! I just got off the phone with a UA agent and he put me up front on the first flight (still in economy, but hey, I will take it)
One concern is if I missed the connection, will UA book me onto the next flight if this is all one PNR /ticket? Will the kiosk be able to do this?

Okay, there are some very useful steps here. So do CBP pre-immigration, go to checkpoint G for security, get to Terminal 2 and walk to the gate. It seems that these few days UA436 has been using the E gates. If that's the case, then maybe I'd just need to do a short walk to Terminal 3, not 2?
The trip is in early March and I will report back... I hope I don't have to spend the night in the airport - the UA agent told me there's no guarantee of a hotel
