The agent manning the door took my boarding pass and asked the people working inside. They insisted I needed the entire reservation to be on one PNR.
That's why I don't have a boarding pass yet, I don't even have the app on my phone.

To clarify - Not checking in for another airline.
Examples are arriving in MIA and then taking a connection. I had stepped out completely to meet someone and then wanted to check my small bag in. Check in refused to let me in. Manager overheard and overruled the agent. Another one was flying LAX-DFW-GRU. LAX wouldn't let me in.
Written to AA CR who have clarified that I am entitled to access in all of these cases.

It's embarrassing as to how badly run this is.
Gotcha - I've never tried to use it after flying an international segment, with only domestic left.
