I certainly can't think of any major market in the US that has that level of competition (ie NYC-LAX would be UA, AA, HP, DL, CO - 5 carriers).
I think it's great, since it not only keeps the pricing in check, but it offers passengers more selection with respect to dep/arr times.
Often I want to arrive in a city at a specific time. Many of those airlines you listed don't offer much selection.
