The 1 and 5 JPY coins are useless, except maybe at shrines for good luck. But the 10/50/100/500 coins are worth salvaging because you can add money to the Suica/Pasmo card in many (most nowadays?) ticket machines at train and subway stations in 10 JPY increments.
