Have done it several times via PVG. Never once had an issue or so much as a question. Every time on separate tickets and to a hotel for 24hrs.

EDIT - let me clarify that the “Never once had an issue” , related to China Immigration. Getting the agent at the First Wing LHR to accept the info loaded into Timatic on their computer system, was my biggest hurdle so far.
