In my experience, and it's only that, they are applying a significantly different approach to sending bags to secondary screening with the result that the percentage of bags which go to secondary is much higher than elsewhere. That combines with a poor use of space and approach to fast track which means that the amount of time a passenger has to set aside to clear security at MAN is significantly longer than elsewhere.

The proportion of bags going to secondary search means that the consequences of going to secondary search are greater, too, since it's essentially the start of a further queuing process rather than a near-immediate secondary search. I am often dropped off at MAN by family who live about a 45 minute drive away. It is sometimes the case that they are home before I am through security. I cannot think of another UK airport where that would happen frequently.
