What you’d have to do is book a dummy flight for, say, $251 bucks with wallet credit, then book your $249/$1 flight, and then cancel the $251 flight for wallet credit.
Just for clarification to anyone reading this as you’d need to cancel that dummy booking soon after (in less than 24h) as if not it’ll turn that gift card balance into a flight credit (the wallet balance will look the same) but failing to cancel in time will make that dummy booking credit need to be used within a year.

Previously when I had the card the free bag was tied to the MP# of the card holder, so if they were flying/on the reservation the benefit was received regardless of the card/form of payment, but now it seems to have be updated and like UA where the ticket needs to be paid with the card which is annoying.
