I finished my first week stay at Courtyard Kuala Lumpur South. I paid 306 MYR per night for a "Standard, Guest room, 1 King, City view" and received a complimentary upgrade to a "1 Bedroom Suite, 1 King, City view, High floor" which has a list price of 871 MYR per night. For the price, it is great value (amazing value with the suite upgrade). I extended my stay another week, and I was upgraded again, and now I've extended again (until the end of December) and received another upgrade -- so I'll have a full month in the same suite, for just 306 MYR per night.

* The staff are very polite and helpful and competent
* The bed is very comfortable
* Air conditioning is very good, easy to get the room down to 18c at night
* The suite layout is a very good use of space, it has a large sofa, a 4-seat dining table and a sink and a microwave and glasses and cutlery and plates and bowls
* The desk has an ergonomic chair (a relief for my back after Fairfield and AC Hotel's chairs)
* The curtains and blinds are electric; all of the lights are linked together with a single switch*
* The bathroom has sliding doors, the bedroom has a pocket door
* The view is nice, there's a clear view of the river, it is fun to watch the fish and birds compete to eat the bugs at sunset and I've seen people fishing on a few occasions
* No noise from outside the hotel or other rooms

I initially discounted this hotel because the website specifically states that rooms do not have fridges, and there's no mention of bidets in the bathrooms. However, there is a fridge in my room (maybe fridges are only included in a suite?) and there is a bidet too. I imagine I'll end up in a non-suite at some point during my stay so I will come back and confirm whether the standard rooms have fridges and bidets.

The hotel itself:

* Courtyard Lounge is nice, it has some good places to sit to work or eat. I don't think there is any free food though, as far as I can tell, everything on the menu is chargeable, as it isn't restricted to elite members
* Looking at the floor plan, I'd guess there's ~25 suites in the hotel
* Hotel seems pretty empty, except at check-in time at weekends when the lobby is filled with dozens of people
* Laundry is reasonably priced**

I suspect the hotel is quite empty due to how new it is, and that over time it'll fill up and become more expensive. At the current price, I think it's much better value at higher-end options (e.g: Le Méridien). If the price was equivalent to Le Méridien I'd probably take Le Méridien instead, but for this little money, it's a no brainer.

The location is a little out of the way but it's still within grab food delivery distance of central KL so I can still get all the food I want delivered. The area is a recent development with a large mall, and office and apartment buildings attached, so there are cute community events outside (which I guess may dry up eventually but for now at least, it's a family-friendly area). The mall has a very large 24 hour supermarket called MeMi ZoooZooo (I made the mistake of going to the FamilyMart next to the hotel instead for my first week, because the name "MeMi ZoooZooo" didn't sound like a supermarket... the FamilyMart is probably the worst FamilyMart I've been to) and lots of food outlets, coffee shops etc.

The not so great things:

* Laundry has a 3x price for men's t-shirts when compared to women's (I've been wearing women's t-shirts since discovering the discrepancy)
* Laundry turnaround time is +1 day on the standard service, express service is a 100% surcharge, so to turn in laundry at midnight and get it back ~18 hours later costs +100% (which is still cheap for hotel laundry so it's not a problem, just weird)
* Shower takes a few minutes to heat up
* Although there are lots of light switches that are linked to different fixtures and zones, the "master" light switch in the bedroom only turns on/off the bedroom lights. I have to walk into the lounge to turn off the actual master light switch, and once that's turned off, no other lights can be turned on (e.g: the bathroom light...).
* The plug sockets are a mix of type G (local) and type C (international) which is great to avoid the need for an adapter... but the desk lamp uses the type C (international), mooting the benefits of having both plug types (I had to go and buy an adapter)

My prediction is that for the next year, this hotel will continue to be the best value hotel in KL because it has the shine of a new hotel and the low prices of a hotel that nobody knows exists, but over time, as the occupancy increases and the furnishings are worn, it'll end up a pretty standard Courtyard in Asia. So, for now, I'm going to make hay while the sun shines by staying here until the price goes up.

That's probably more a reflection on me than it is the AC hotel. I live in hotels and spend all my time working so the quality of the room (and more specifically the desk + chair) is most important to me. Good sleep and good sitting is my criteria. I imagine most people do not evaluate a hotel based on sitting.
