Same here. I always travel with a packet of wet wipes in case I need to do the same. I've very often have the dreaded X when landing in BOM but have never got one in DEL.
I think at some point they used to mark every bag in BOM. The wet wipe trick works well. Also if you place the bag on the cart with the mark not visible, the guy at xray is usually too lazy to bother to move it around, specially if the cart is fully loaded.
