No experience, but I would be shocked if partial payment with the credit card isn’t sufficient to trigger the free bag benefit. Surely they don’t want me to be paying for a bag if I apply the $25 discount certificate I just received for voluntarily switching my flight to one more convenient for AS, for example.

I suspect in practice it will be the same as the requirement to use an AS Visa for companion pass purchases. There you can pay the entire fare with wallet credit.

AS is really bad at documenting these things. They say “Airfare must be purchased with your Card to qualify for this benefit.” so if you take that literally, an award ticket where you pay for the airfare with miles and then the taxes (not the fare) with the credit card wouldn’t qualify.
