I am a business traveler with limited vacation days who flies to Australia several times a year.
I prefer a non-stop, but SEA SYD/MEL/BNE nonstop doesn't exist. I would definitely fly the SEA HNL SYD routing if it worked for my onward connection to PER.
The connecting flight through HNL is a great option over the LAX connection if you're not connecting far beyond SYD given 19:45 arrival. It's the lowest overall duration routing I've seen and the price isn't horrible for that market.
The cheapest I've seen is YVR NAN SYD, which is pretty similar in concept.
I don't think we are going to see SEA SYD by AS anytime soon. SYD was below the line for optimal flight routing through SEA.
