Which brings me to a completely OT but funny story. I was once having lunch with a well-connected Tokyo native, and next to us was some oyaji with a comely lass. At the end of the meal my companion greets the ojayi effusively. When we left, I asked him why he hadn't greeted him when they arrived. He said that he wasn't sure the babe was his daughter or his mistress, as it certainly wasn't his wife. Once he listened in and concluded it was the daughter, all clear. Otherwise he would have kept his mouth shut.
