The new changes suck. No SDC at airport, only online unless have status. Online frequently fails leaving no options for numerous.

Same fare class isn't required. However a seat being available (even in same fare class) isn't it either. Basically AA decides if they will allow SDC on a flight by flight basis. You could have a J fare but not be allowed to SDC to a flight with J. Routing changes have never been allowed.
