yea first time in Japan, but traveled many times to Asia like Singapore Vietnam Thailand China etc. we are Asian and we find most hotel foods are not the most authentic even though they could be decent food or even good food. But if Japan is different then that’s fine we would try it. And if its free because of my diamond status sure why not right? Though I get it that the local hotels can have good authentic food. To each their own and food is the most important part of our travels.

Oh wait, those places are local places.
Case in point, stayed at daiwa roynet in aomori. Breakfast was at Uguisu in ground floor. Place was outstanding for dinner but the breakfast was amazing and was included in the rate.
And even if it's their own restaurant, some places do a great job with local specialties.
I think your view about hotel food in japan is a little warped.
