I am surprised by how few go arounds I have experience despite living in Thailand and Sth Korea for 4 years each. I have been in a THAI A300 where the pilot reacted (correctly) to a TCAS alert mid-way between Bangkok and Hanoi, involving a quite decent pitch-up and roll (for an airliner). Contacts within THAI Air Traffic had a look and confirmed the Vietnam Air aircraft had breached its assigned altitude...

In terms of overshoots, I was flying BKK-SIN in 2005 on an SQ 747. The approach to runway 20R was notable for many large power changes, and followed by a quick left, then right turns at around 600' and then an overshoot and second successful landing on runway 20R.

I was sufficiently concerned about the way the approach had been flown that I wrote to Singapore CAA to ask what had occurred and whether an incident had been reported by either SQ or Air Traffic. I was quite surprised to only only receive an acknowledgement, but a subsequent response addressing each of my specific questions. Response posted below in case anyone is curious.

Dear Mr Thai-Kiwi,

SIA 67 OVERSHOOT WSSS 18 JUNE 2005

Thank you for your feedback. Our investigations show that SIA 067 was initially vectored for runway 20R. However SIA67 was later vectored for runway 20C as part of our normal procedures when a tall ship transits the waters north of Changi Airport.

When SIA 067 was about 8nm from runway 20C, the tower controller instructed a departing aircraft to enter the runway for take-off. When the departing aircraft was slow in lining up for departure, the tower controller instructed the departing aircraft to keep clear of Runway 20C. The pilot informed the tower controller that the aircraft had crossed the runway holding position. For flight safety, the tower controller instructed SIA67 to conduct a missed approach which was carried out. SIA67 later landed on Runway 20R.

As for your queries,

Has an incident report been submitted by ATC or SQ ?
Yes , both ATC and SIA had reported the incident.

What was the reason for the go-around ?
As the departing aircraft had reported that the aircraft had crossed the runway holding position, SIA67 was instructed to conduct a missed approach for flight safety.

Will this event be investigated ?
Yes

Will this outcome be made available ?
Results of investigation will be provided to SIA.

Was the first approach flown (incorrectly) to Runway 20R ?
SIA 067 was vectored initially for runway 20R , but was later vectored for runway 20C. This is the normal procedure when a tall ship transits the waters north of Changi airport.
