Removal of Kiosks

Last weekend I flew to Houston from Lubbock by way of Dallas Love. I had booked separate LBB-DAL and DAL-HOU tickets on sale to maximize my RR credit earning.

I was unable to print boarding passes online, so on the day of travel I printed out my LBB-DAL boarding pass when I got to the Lubbock airport, and figured I'd print the next one out when I arrived at DAL.

I was surprised to find that there were NO kiosks anywhere to be found at Love (unless I left the gate area and then came back through security) so I had an agent print me one at the gate. This was ok since I had plenty of time and there was not much of a line at the gate. But it was still more of a hassle than kiosk check-in would have been.

Today I heard from my father who just got back from a similar 2-ticket trip to Las Vegas (ELP-PHX and PHX-LAS) who told me that they had also removed all of the kiosks in the gate area at the Phoenix airport.

He wrote: 'We had to go to the desk to get a boarding pass and to check in. They were even rude, wanting to know how we got to the boarding area without a boarding pass! They told us for security reasons, all kiosks in the boarding areas have been removed, but you can still use them outside the boarding area (which we did).'

Anyone know whether this (removal of kiosks) has been done at all airports, and what triggered this action?
