When booking a bike it is useful to just go on the ba.com chat, ask the operator (once you’ve bypassed the annoying bot) and tell them to put a BIKE SSR on your booking together with the dimensions and weight of the bike box.
there is a report that gets generated if more than 5 bike boxes are booked; this is very useful on shorthaul as space can be at a premium. Arriving early could help but in reality bike boxes are loaded last.
If you’re going with a group, or with a bunch of mates, please do that. It ain’t Mary Poppins’ bag down there.
Fact is, that on a BA direct booking, they did ask why I was bothering, this was Gold line, not a bot.
On an Amex booking, BA
refused to accept direct communication and insisted I request the SSR via Amex, then asked absurd questions via Amex, then
refused to approve the SSR because "
they have to approve it at the airport once they see the bike and packaging".
This is my direct experience of how BA behave.
