Sadly, the process of booking AA flights with Avios was drastically undermined when AA replaced the majority of SAAver fares, which were available for Avios booking, with WebsAAver fares which are only available to AA member to book online, as the name suggests. This resulted in the number of sAAver fares disappearing. I wrote to both AA and BA at the time of the change but each blamed the other and neither wanted to try to negotiate a return to how things were. The cash value of booking AA sAAver domestic fares with Avios made them some of the most cost effective Avios exemptions available and that was further amplified by the weakness of the £pound. It’s fair to say that their demise was one of the worst Avios devaluation events in recent times. Sadly, this event passed almost without comment on FT and HfP.
