This is by no means limited to Asian carriers. LH Group carriers, for example, have very restrictive rules for plating intra-Europe flights.

Yes, intra-Asia on connecting itineraries.

The ultimate answer is that unless OP is planning to fly UA to TPE, it won't be possible to utilize a UA credit for a BR flight.
