I can't find a ticket that's less than 1.5k anywhere.
Sometimes tickets (Economy class) that show prices of around $1000 on Google.com/flights search or SkyScanner.com show higher prices as high as $3k when trying to actually book them.

Even though one expects higher price around early-Jan, this seems exorbitant.
What's going on, is this usual?
How to find the reasonable price on such a ticket around Jan2-5?
That's peak timing & prices will be high. Try looking at flights to places like NYC, ORD, BOS, etc. They would be much cheaper than flying into SFO. From there you can take a connecting flight to SFO. Even with the extra flight you should end up with a decent saving over flying DEL-SFO.
