This might be true—I don't have enough experience with NYC high-end properties—but if it is, it's really sad. It can't be that hard to find a couple dozen upbeat people in the country's biggest city. I've stayed at much cheaper NYC properties where the staff made it seem like I made their day just being there.
There are certainly better hotels but as many have said, it really depends on expectations. I still think PHNY is the best Hyatt in NYC but I have set pretty low expectations based on all the reviews here.
I think the biggest issues with a high end hotels within a large chain is managing that expectation. Guests with status are used to promises that are cheaper to deliver at a business hotel but are much harder at places where cash is prioritized over loyalty.
One common complaint is feeling nickeled and dimed at breakfast. I can totally understand feeling that way when your room is supposedly $1600 a night. But that’s not really unique to Hyatt. You hear the same complaints at St Regis or Conrad. At least you are not charged a silly amenity fee.
