I am not sure if you have had a chance to read upthread, but the informal protocol that has evolved at LHR is that you don't wait for announcements, particularly if you see Wilson James' staff with assistance passengers after the gate scanners. Just go along the side alongside the tensalators, to the gate staff desk. Just show your boarding pass, you don't even have to say anything. You should then be waved through the gates.
