Hawaiian already failed at securing Antitrust Immunity for a JV with JAL between Asia and Hawaii. That was decided during the first Trump administration. I think AS will try for that eventually but AS has so many other things to do right now I have to assume it will be a couple of years.
I suppose the A321 engine issues prevent an introduction of ANC-NRT? That feels like a future route once those get worked out. It's shorter than B6's JFK-AMS on LRs. Did HA order any XLRs?
I get the general sentiment that competing to NRT and ICN is going to be tough sledding for AS, especially when there is nonstop competition plus connecting competition with DL/UA/AC/WS. But AS has overcome many of those types of challenges before which is how they got to where they are today. I didn't realize and its wild to me that AS at SEA has more daily departures than UA at SFO. UA may fly more ASMs or seats due to widebodies but AS has the heft to pull this off. When you add in the mileage plan loyalty, the revenue management improvements in their plans, and surely an onboard product improvement over the A330s over time, I can absolutely see this being successful. They're just going to have to keep their costs low in the short term.
