But I'm having a hard time believing they would close the gate while we are standing like 2 meters there at the document check booth (travelling in J).
So either we are at the gate before gate closing time and then they can do the check right away, or we are late anyways and the gate is closed irrespectively whether the document check has been made or not.

I do have a backup connection, but the KL flight is much more favored for several reasons.
