Another thing to try is to find the deal you want in Google flights. If you can find it there, then you can push what you find over to AA for purchase. Sometimes, Google is able to find flights and fares that the airline's own website can't, but the airline website is still able to book them if they're pushed over from Google, assuming they're valid. This way, you're still purchasing from AA and not a travel agent.
