Rakeback on your credit cards absolutely has cash value and can be received as cash if that's what you prefer to target in your card portfolio. If you tender miles or CC points for a ticket, it's not free or even close to free - you're just paying with a currency other than dollars because you chose to save some money in that currency. Moderately less true for airline miles you accumulated by flying (since you have no flexibility), but there's still the opportunity cost factor.
If someone doesn't want to use "money" then using a proxy for the money is the only option I can think of. Short of signing up for give away travel prizes or making friends with someone who is willing to buy J for you or getting a job that will fly you in J, I don't see a another way to get something for "free".
I agree 100%. That's why I added a caveat that it may not be a good deal depending on how one values miles.
