Even if there was unlimited overhead bin space the most perfect frictionless sphere boarding plan falls apart the second you have someone in a wheelchair, or a family that wants to board together, or someone that isn't at the gate when boarding starts, or a dozen other things that come up every flight. Which is why airlines will never use any of them.
