Aloha, RichardMSP. I would say that any hotel on the Kohala Coast is going to be "gay friendly," you wouldn't feel uncomfortable anywhere that you stay. However, Hilton Waikoloa (you were pretty close

) is known as the Disney World of the Resorts because it is large, offers many activities, and VERY popular with families (the ones with kids). On the negative side, it is not located on a desireable beach.
My favorite places to stay would be the Hapuna Prince, Mauni Lani Bay and Bungalows, and the Fairmont. All three are stunning properties with decent rooms. The Prince is located on a beach that is constantly rated as one of the top 10 beaches in the state.
