Why do AMS-NCL/EDI/MME flights take the longer overland route?
I've noticed that flights from AMS to GLA, INV, and ABQ are routed more or less directly as the crow flies, whilst flights to MME, NCL, and EDI pretty much make the shortest possible channel crossing and then fly north over UK airspace, which adds to the distance and flight time. Why is that? Do they calculate that being overland in case of an emergency is more important than shorter flight time and burning less fuel?
