I was going to give you a specific example, but weirdly the fare class of the return leg seems to depend on the day I choose for my outbound leg. But as an example, if you choose the LGW - BKK at 2115 on 14th Feb outbound, and the BKK-DOH-LHR at 2020 (arriving at 0550) on 24th Feb return, you see the Y business class for the QR flight when booking through the BA app/website. Choosing other outbound days sometimes give a D fare for the same return flight, which I understand to be business? I'm very confused if I'm honest!
I have seen examples of this when using google flights, but the fares have been noticeably “cheap” compared to others. As has been mentioned in other replies, it likely happens when there’s no J availability on one leg. However, I think the fares are adjusted as a result. Your experience may differ of course!
